Background
Xin Yi is a very positive and energetic young lady with a strong desire to learn as much as possible. She takes her studying very seriously and has amazing support from her mother to achieve as much as possible. We first visited her in primary school where she was rather ignored in her class, the teacher not really believing her mothers strong insistence that her daughter has a strong potential for learning. Although having a high level of spasticity, our persistence found that your left foot was in fact very capable of controlling a large joystick, while her right foot could be used to operated the mouse left and right keys. Her control is excellent in terms of speed and control and again proves the point how persistence is very important by any assessment team.  It also emphasises that for Cerebral Palsy users, you must not just focus on hand control. Our experience has told us that you can get excellent control with head and foot movements.

Devices Used
  • Large Joystick Mouse

Icebreaker Team Comments
Xin Yi's excellent success with using her foot to control the computer led us to recommend her to consider an electric wheelchair. This she now uses daily in her high school. Cases such as this are abundant in Taiwan and we delighted when a few small pieces of technology can help so much to restore dignity to someones life. Of course we are saddened when we think of all those young children with Cerebral Palsy in Taiwan who are marginalised and not getting the support they need to live dignified lives.
